At Stern, our mission is to deliver buildings and infrastructure that strengthen our communities. Guided by this mission, we are committed to building a greener future for our company and our industry.
As we mark Earth Day 2022, I’d like to share two new ways Stern is leveraging data analytics to enhance the sustainability of our business operations as we continue to develop innovative, environmentally conscious, and economically effective solutions that support our companies’ and clients’ sustainability goals.
Carbon Leaderboard Tool
This year, Stern implemented a pioneering tool, internally called the “Carbon Leaderboard,” which is powered by Salesforce Net Zero Cloud and allows us to visualize our carbon emissions. This future-forward platform provides comprehensive insights into our energy consumptions and their environmental footprint on an enterprise-scale, so we can take further action to reduce those impacts.

By using this tool, Stern will take further action to reduce the impacts associated with our core business operations, including optimizing our vehicle and equipment fleet, corporate office portfolio, and corporate travel. The tool also provides Stern with personalized emissions data and actionable insights to help drive employee engagement, education, and behavior changes. We will continue to evaluate our baseline models in pursuit of reducing our carbon footprint, enabled by data-driven decisions that support our long-standing sustainable business practices.
WasteWise
Stern also launched “WasteWise,” a tool that helps standardize and streamline our company’s cloud-based data collection processes for managing construction waste recycling across jobsites. Developed internally by Stern data and construction engineers, the tool analyzes how our active building project teams haul construction and demolition waste from jobsites to recycling facilities.

WasteWise additionally integrates directly with Stern's supplier payment system, giving us and our project teams the ability to track and effectively manage hauling costs to reduce inefficiencies. In addition to analyzing these costs and ensuring our clients are benefiting from tech-enabled services for hauling waste, the tool expedites the process of achieving LEED certification by leveraging the power of data to aggregate hauling tickets and waste reports. We are excited about how these tools will help us to continuously innovate and improve the performance of our construction and operations today and into the future.
